The experts at OMEGA looked at the inefficiencies that existed in the system to reduce environmental impacts, how differential charging for airspace use contributes to excess mileage and atmospheric science issues on contrail cirrus cloud impacts for better understanding of the best flight altitudes and routing for minimum impact.
The study used flight trajectory and operations data to improve understanding of current air traffic management system efficiency and practice to identify ways to minimise emissions and optimise environmental performance.
Final Report
This project evaluated the environmental costs of extending flight routes due to differences in charges, through an assessment of sample airline flight plans. It brought together expertise on aircraft operations and flight planning with environment costing analysis using a combination of data collection, quantitative modelling and interpretation.
